Description

The Town Hall and Theatre, built in 1911 by Russell and Cooper, is located in Wedgwood Place, Burslem, Stoke on Trent. The building features an ashlar-faced exterior with brick at the rear. The entrance block has a full-height portico supported by three pairs of Corinthian columns, which hold up the entablature, cornice, and a pierced balustrade. Each of the three bays contains a doorway with moulded architraves. Flanking this central section are two advanced wings that have recessed stone panels within moulded architraves and semi-circular windows. The lower flanking bays have curved parapets with oculi. Above the cornice, there is a large attic storey featuring a shell motif in relief on the projecting outer sections. To the south, there is a two-storeyed range with ten bays, showcasing narrow 15-pane sash windows set in stone architraves, along with a doorway that has a moulded architrave and fanlight within a coved arch. An ironwork balcony above the doorway is supported by stone brackets and overlooks a full-height window in a stressed architrave. The building is topped with a moulded parapet eaves cornice.
