Description
Nos. 36, 38, and 40 on Queen Street in Burslem are a group of shops built in 1868. The buildings are constructed from brick with stone dressings and feature slate roofs. They rise three storeys high and are arranged in six bays, set on a curve that leads into St John's Square.
The left side has an inserted shop front, followed by three stilted arches above the windows, which are supported by shafts with heavy foliate capitals. There is a wider archway that used to provide rear access. Above, the grouped windows are divided by cylindrical shafts and have continuous sill bands. Hood moulds over the 2-centred arched windows create a continuous arcade across the façade. The attic storey features stilted arched windows. The building is topped with a modillion eaves cornice and has gathered axial and gable stacks.
