Description

Nos. 15 and 15A on St John's Square are shop premises dating from the early 19th century. The building is constructed of painted brick and features slate roofs that are hipped around the corner. It has two storeys and two bays facing St John's Square, with a return onto William Clowes Street. The shop fronts are from the 20th century, while above them are four-pane sash windows with flat-arched stuccoed heads. A part of the moulded eaves cornice remains. This location was used by the author Arnold Bennett as "John Bain's Shop" in his novel "The Old Wives' Tale."
