Description
The School of Art, built around 1905 by A R Wood, is located on the south side of Queen Street in Burslem, Stoke on Trent. This two-storey building features a combination of brick and terracotta with a tiled roof and is designed in three bays. The outer bays are accentuated by pedimented shallow gables and flanking blocks that end in castellated turrets. The ground floor has triple windows with segmentally-arched terracotta surrounds, while the upper level showcases massive segmentally-arched studio windows, complete with terracotta keystones and a coat of arms at the apex. Shallow pilasters adorn the flanking towers. The central entrance is marked by doors set within a bowed portico supported by Ionic columns, which carry an entablature featuring embossed lettering and a balustrade above. A large tripartite window, divided by slight Ionic piers, is positioned above the entrance. A balustraded parapet connects the turrets that flank the outer gables.
