Description
No. 1 Moorland Road is a Grade II* listed bank building, originally a dwelling, constructed in 1751 for Thomas and John Wedgwood. It is built of brick and features a plain tiled roof. The building is three stories high and has five bays, with the central bay being advanced and topped with a pediment. The central doorway is framed by a Doric architrave, complete with a triglyph frieze and a pedimented head, flanked by margin lights. The sash windows have stone architraves in the central bay, and the building includes sill bands, a moulded eaves cornice, and gable end stacks.
The return elevation facing Wedgwood Place consists of two bays with 12-pane sash windows (nine in the attic), which have stuccoed heads with keystones and a heavy cornice at the parapet. The interior reportedly retains its staircase and panelling. This building is noted as the earliest surviving example of a pottery manufacturer's house.
