Description

The Church Inn is an 18th-century house, later converted to an inn, located on Church Street in Ludlow. The front of the building is stuccoed over brick, with a Welsh slate roof and brick stacks at the front and rear. It is three stories high, with an attic and cellar, and originally had a five-window front. The windows are mostly 2/2 sashes, some dating to the 20th century. A decorative band and pilaster feature above the left-hand window. The second floor has similar sashes, and the eaves are formed of moulded wood. The early 20th-century inn frontage has a flat hood over enriched consoles and a frieze. A canted corner return on College Street includes a 20th-century glazed door and overlight within a plain surround, flanked by moulded pilasters under a returned fascia and cornice. The College Street front features 19th-century brickwork with late 19th-century 2/2 sashes in the gable and on the first floor, and two late 19th-century 3/3 sashes on the ground floor. A blocked entrance is present to the right, all of these windows set within deep segmental arches. The rear elevation includes late 19th-century 2/2 sashes, a 20th-century door, an 18th-century 6/6 sash window with a metal casement and later leaded lights, and two 18th-century sashes. The first floor rear windows include two 18th-century sashes and one 18th-century two-light window with a metal casement and later leaded lights. The rear elevation also has moulded and modillioned wood eaves and five gable dormers, one of which contains a door and all of which have hipped slate roofs.
