Description

1A High Street is a shop and dwelling that dates back to the 17th century, with alterations made in the 18th and 19th centuries. The building features a combination of brick, timber-frame, and plaster, topped with a plain tile roof that has twin gables at the front. It has a single bay plan and stands four storeys tall with a cellar.

The façade has a two-window range, including an 18th-century bow window with six-over-six sash windows, a stud and plaster underhang, and a 19th-century cast-iron guard. To the right, there is a 20th-century metal casement window with leaded lights, set in close studding. The second floor features a similar bow window, but with a combination of four-over-four and six-over-six sashes. There is a jetty on this floor with an enriched 20th-century bressummer-board and consoles, alongside a 20th-century mullion window with metal casements and leaded lights, also set in close studding.

The third floor has another jetty with an enriched bressummer-board and consoles, one of which is from the 20th century. This floor includes two 20th-century mullion windows with metal casements and leaded lights, and the framing shows chevron bracing. The twin gables have enriched eaves supported by consoles and feature enriched finials. The ground floor is made of 18th-century brick, with a 20th-century glazed door and a 20th-century shop window in an altered opening. The returned sides of the building display 20th-century enriched eaves and finials.

The front facing Harp Lane is also built of 18th-century brick and has 20th-century casement windows on the first and second floors, along with a 20th-century dormer window. Inside, the building has many exposed timbers and a winder stair with 18th-century turned balusters.
