Description
PREES C.P. DARLISTON SJ 53 SE 7/66 Bainton Cottages - (formerly listed as The Post Office 28.10.60 and Cottage adjoining Post Office) - II Shown on O.S. map as Post Office. Farmhouse, latterly divided into cottage and post office, now house. Early C17 with later additions and alterations. Timber framed with painted brick infill; plain tile roof. L-plan comprising hall range of 2½ framed bays to right and gabled cross-wing projecting to left. One storey and attic to hall range, 2 storeys to cross-wing. Framing: square and rectangular panels, 3 from cill to wall-plate, with short straight tension braces and V-struts from collar to hall range; gable of cross-wing is close studded with middle rail and hewn jetty to first floor; moulded bressumer with ogee stops and long straight tension braces to ground floor, herringbone decoration above tie beam. Late C20 leaded casements in panels of framing, 2 to ground floor of cross-wing with one above to gable; 2 to ground floor of hall range with contemporary gabled eaves dormers asymmetrically placed above. C18 or C19 boarded door under gabled hood to left of hall range with rebuilt brown brick stack directly behind ridge immediately to left. Interior: not inspected but likely to be of interest.
