Description

Bainton Cottages is a 17th-century farmhouse that has been divided into a cottage and post office, now functioning as a house. It features a timber frame with painted brick infill and a plain tile roof. The building is arranged in an L-plan, consisting of a hall range with two and a half framed bays on the right and a gabled cross-wing projecting to the left. The hall range has one storey and an attic, while the cross-wing has two storeys.

The framing includes square and rectangular panels, with three panels from the cill to the wall-plate, short straight tension braces, and V-struts from the collar to the hall range. The gable of the cross-wing is close studded with a middle rail and a hewn jetty on the first floor. The ground floor features a moulded bressumer with ogee stops and long straight tension braces, along with herringbone decoration above the tie beam.

The windows are late 20th-century leaded casements set within the framing, with two on the ground floor of the cross-wing and one above in the gable. The hall range has two ground floor windows and contemporary gabled eaves dormers placed asymmetrically above. There is a boarded door from the 18th or 19th century under a gabled hood to the left of the hall range, with a rebuilt brown brick stack located directly behind the ridge to the left. The interior has not been inspected but is likely to be of interest.
