Description

Laburnum Cottage is a farmhouse, which was later divided into two cottages and is now a house. It dates from the mid-17th century with later additions and alterations. The house is timber-framed with rendered infill and a machine tile roof. Originally a two-cell plan, it was extended to the left in the late 20th century. It is one storey and has an attic. The timber framing consists of square panels, three from sill to wall-plate, with long straight tension braces. The windows are replacements from the late 20th century; two casements are on the ground floor, one to the right of two 19th-century open gabled porches, the left porch having a 20th-century panelled door, and the right porch now containing a leaded fixed-light window. Three late 20th-century gabled eaves dormers are also visible. A red brick stack is located immediately behind the ridge, in the centre of the roof. Inside, the timber framing (with square panels) is exposed to a cross-wall and the original left gable end. The 17th-century part contains a chamfered spine beam and heavy joists to the left ground-floor room. The roof is a collar and tie beam roof, spanning two bays. The late 20th-century extension is not of particular architectural note.
