Description
The former Elephant and Castle Public House, built around 1860, is a three-storey brick building with rusticated stucco on the ground floor and a low pitched roof that is not visible. The facade features a three-window range, with the ground floor consisting of three arches: a doorway on the left, an arch leading to a passage on the right, and a central window. Above this, there is a dentilled cornice that supports a cast-iron balustrade. The upper floors have two-pane sash windows set in moulded stone architraves, with segmental arches and keystones. A continuous sill band runs beneath the second storey windows, which are also framed by moulded architraves. Moulded modillion brackets support the overhanging roof. This building presents a robust and unusually complete Italianate public house facade from the mid-19th century.
