Description
This is a late 19th-century house and offices, originally built as a police station in 1893. It is located on Swan Hill, Shrewsbury, and comprises two adjoining sections, Nos. 23 and 23A, separated by a carriage archway. The building is constructed with a stone (ashlar) facing on a brick core, and has a Welsh slate roof.
The main block (No. 23) has three storeys and five windows. It features paired sash windows with two panes, set within moulded architraves, with the outer bays slightly projecting and topped with shallow segmental pediments. The ground floor is articulated with rusticated pilasters. A more recent double door has been inserted to the left, and the original single doorway is located off-centre. A decorative frieze runs along the first floor, above which is a cornice and parapet adorned with urns. A high archway, located to the left, has a mask as its keystone, and above this is a triple window flanked by Mannerist balustraded pilasters.
No. 23A is a narrower two-window range set back from the archway, accessed from the side. This section also has rusticated pilasters and round-arched windows. Above the archway is a square window with a pedimented head, and a projecting sill that forms a small balcony.
