Description

Sandford House Farmhouse is a late 18th-century farmhouse, possibly incorporating parts of an earlier building, with extensions from the early 19th century and later alterations. It is constructed of red brick and features a slate roof. The original three-bay house was extended by one bay to the right in the early 19th century. The building is two storeys high with a gable-lit attic and has a dentilled eaves cornice, a chamfered plinth, and a cellar. The front has four windows with segmental-headed glazing bar sashes, although the windows to the right of the straight joint were replaced in the late 20th century. The original entrance was central, featuring a plain pilastered doorcase with a bracketed flat hood and a rectangular barred overlight above a six-panel door. The external end stack to the left was rebuilt in the late 20th century, as was the entire wall, and there is a ridge stack to the right at the junction with the 19th-century addition. At the rear, there is a two-storey brick lean-to from the 19th century. Inside, several rooms have chamfered ceiling beams and joists, and the back walls are made of wattle and daub. The doors are ledged, braced, and panelled. A late 18th-century staircase located in the rear right corner of the entrance hall features a moulded handrail and stick balusters on the first flight. The attic has collar and tie beam roof trusses and oak floorboards.
