12/40 Milestone approx. 260 - metres to north-west of English Lodge

Milestone. Late C18. Painted red sandstone. Square base, with broaches to triangular-section shaft. Inscribed, on base "Alberbury", right-hand side: "SALOP/9/MILES", and left-hand side: "LLAN/FYLLIN/16/MILES". The Llanfyllin road was turnpiked by 1780 which included its diversion to the south of the village. There was a tollgate at Alberbury by 1783. V.C.H. Vol VIII, p. 187.
