Description
This outbuilding, located approximately 2 metres southeast of Brook House in Ashford Carbonell, is likely a former laundry and kitchen that has been converted into a garage. It dates back to the 17th century and features a single-bay timber frame with painted render and brick infill, along with sections of brick and sandstone rubble, topped with a tiled roof.
The exterior is a single storey, with a gable facing the street that includes a raking-strut truss above 20th-century boarded garage doors. The sides of the building have square framing that is two panels high, complete with sill and wall plates, studs, and mid rails. The south side has stone rubble walls from a rear stack, which is now capped below the roof eaves. A small window light has been inserted where a door once was. The north side features a brick rear store with a plain boarded door, as well as a boarded door on the side.
Inside, the building has a single trenched-purlin roof with an open internal truss made up of principal rafters and a tie beam. This roof was restored in the 19th century. The outbuilding serves as an example of detached timber-framed service accommodation that supported the main timber-framed house, Brook House. It is included for its group value with Brook House.
