Description
This sundial, dated 1776, is located approximately 7 metres south of the nave of the Church of St. Mary in Westbury. It is made of dressed grey sandstone and features a square base consisting of three stone steps, with the top step having a moulded nosing. The sundial has a baluster with gadrooned lower parts and a square top, which holds a copper dial plate. The dial plate is inscribed with the words: "The Wife of Thomas Rider (?) Broome-Hill 1776 / Move the slide for the sun to shine through the hole on the inner Circle of Degrees / Rider / Fecit". It also has a copper gnomon supported by a scrolled design.
