Description

Oak Cottage is a farmhouse that has been divided into two cottages and is now a single house. It dates from the early 17th century and has undergone later additions and alterations. The building is timber framed with painted brick infill and features a plain tile roof. It stands two storeys high with an attic, which was probably originally lit by windows in the gable ends, and appears to consist of three framed bays.

The framing includes close studding on the ground floor with long straight tension braces, and a hewn jetty on the first floor, which may have originally extended to the gable ends. The ground floor has been underbuilt in brick, with a moulded bressumer supported by carved brackets at the corners and center. There are widely spaced vertical posts and a middle rail with diagonal struts that form diamond patterns.

On the exterior, there are two 20th-century three-light leaded casements directly below the eaves and one to the ground floor on the left, all positioned where original windows once were, with carved brackets below the cills. A 20th-century panelled door has been inserted roughly in the center, replacing the position of a fourth original window. A central red brick ridge stack is also present. The interior has not been inspected but is likely to be of interest.
