Description
The stone statues of Philomathes and Polymathes are set into the gable wall of the library at Shrewsbury School. These statues date from the early 17th century and have been relocated. They are made of sandstone and depict two figures dressed in period costume, placed within an aedicule featuring shell niches between fluted Ionic pilasters. The design includes Greek inscriptions, obelisks, and strapwork above the figures. Below the statues is the royal coat of arms along with an inscription tablet that reads: "His ego fundamen domitus quas, advena, cernis testificor refis me positum esse manu: nec tamen ipse aderat: vis cominus ignem tactu emicat in Jussum subsideoque locum. Adv non IVI anno. Scolae condite CCC LXIII."
