Description
Rigg's Hall at Shrewsbury School is a school house built around 1882 to 1884, designed by architect William White. It features a simple domestic Gothic style, constructed from brick with plain tiled roofs that have ridge cresting. The building is two to three storeys high, with a parallel rear range and rear wings, and has irregular window placements. The entrance is located to the left, at the angle with the advanced rear range, and is sheltered by a lean-to porch supported by raking timber struts.
Beyond the entrance, there is a two-storey section with four windows, which includes full-height canted bay windows topped with hipped tiled roofs, tiled aprons, and windows with mullions and transoms. The building has front and end wall stacks with star-shaped flues. An advanced three-storey section has two windows and features wood mullioned and transomed windows with brick arched heads on the ground and first floors, as well as hipped dormers in the attic storey. The end walls also have stacks. Rigg's Hall is an important example of the Domestic Revival style, showcasing the work of a key Victorian architect and contributing to a notable group of buildings commissioned by Shrewsbury School in the late 19th century.
