Description
The Primary School, built in 1859 by William White and later extended in 1903, was originally established as a National School. The complex consists of three connected parts: two houses for the schoolmaster and schoolmistress, the Boys School on the north side, and the Girls and Infants School on the south. The architecture reflects a Gothic style influenced by Butterfield, featuring steep roofs, pointed arches, and multicoloured banded brickwork.
The main building is L-shaped, with a modern steep tiled roof and a tapered chimney positioned against a gable, as well as a gable on the projecting extension at the north side. The red brick walls are laid in English bond and include a series of flush blue bands, with additional flush bands of yellow and red headers between blue courses, one buttress, and a plinth. The gable displays coupled lancets with multicoloured voussoirs and a cusped pane above rectangular lights, while other windows are tall rectangles beneath a continuous head beam. The later extension is larger and mirrors the wall banding, featuring sash windows.
