Description

Moser's Hall at Shrewsbury School is a school house built between 1884 and 1886 by architect William White. The building is constructed of red brick with brighter red brick dressings and features plain tiled roofs with cresting. It stands three storeys tall, with its main facade facing Greville Road, showcasing four gables that step down the slope and are arranged with irregular windows.

The entrance is located to the right of the centre on the Greville Road elevation, set in a moulded brick archway beneath a hipped-roof porch positioned between two gables. To the right of the doorway is a stair hall beneath a stone-coped gable, illuminated by a stone traceried window. The right-hand gable features a full-height canted bay window with wooden mullioned and transomed lights. Beyond the stair hall, there are two additional gables, with the right-hand gable displaying a ground floor four-light mullioned and transomed squared bay window and two-light mullioned and transomed windows above. The gables are separated by a short range that has three grouped single-light windows on each floor. Each gable has stacks with star-shaped shafts towards the front.

On the Ashton Road elevation, the entrance is in a porch to the right, followed by two gables divided by a single-window range. Each gable has paired two-light windows on the lower floor, with three grouped single-light windows on the first floor and attic of the right-hand gable, and a four-light mullioned and transomed window on each floor of the left-hand gable. Both gables feature tile-hung apexes, with some diaper work present on the left-hand gable. Moser's Hall is a notable example of the Domestic Revival style, representing an early work by one of the leading architects of the Victorian era and is significant as part of a distinguished group of buildings commissioned by Shrewsbury School in the late 19th century.
