Description
Shrewsbury School, School House is a school building constructed around 1882, designed by Sir Arthur Blomfield. It is made of brick with a hipped Welsh slate roof and features terracotta dressings. The building is in the Queen Anne style and has a main range of three storeys and an attic, with a total of ten windows arranged in a 3-4-3 pattern, where the outer sections are slightly advanced.
The central entrance is located within a projecting porch that has fluted pilasters and wood balustrading above. There are paired doors with a traceried fanlight above them, and a tripartite window over the door, which is topped with an entablature and scrolled pediments. The central window has ornamental glazing. The building features 20-pane sash windows with entablatures and continuous sill bands, similar windows are found on the upper storey. The outer sections have tripartite windows on each floor, also with entablatures and scrolled pediments over the first floor. There are ornamental glazed French doors to the right.
A coved cornice is present on the projecting roof, which also has fluted axial stacks. Hipped-roofed dormer windows are set within the roof. At the rear, there is a four-storey range linked to the main block by a wing, which employs similar architectural details. This building is part of a group of structures commissioned by Shrewsbury School and is significant as an early example of the Neo-Georgian style.
