Description
The pair of statues in Lydney Park, located about 300 meters north of the park, are dated uncertainly, previously thought to be Roman but possibly from the 16th or 17th century. These sandstone monoliths are pillar busts in the antique style, depicting a male and female figure, likely the Empress Faustina and the God Pan. Each statue features a boldly sculpted head, although both have broken noses, mounted on a downward tapering square shaft with a pecked surface and drafted edges, culminating in a flared moulded base. They stand approximately 2 meters high and have a maximum width of 400 millimeters. The statues are positioned on either side of the entrance gates to the gardens, which are open to the public. The Lydney Park estate contains elements of a Roman and British settlement, and these statues were once more closely linked to the Baths and Temple site located to the south of their current position.
