Description

No. 71 High Street is a farmhouse that was once the Butchers Arms Inn and is now a dwelling. It dates back to the 16th century, with many modifications made in the 19th century and later. The building is constructed of rendered rubble, with some walls believed to be made of cob. It features a steeply pitched roof covered with double Roman tiles and has a large external eaves stack on the south wall.

The property is long and narrow, positioned gable to the street, and consists of three cells, with a later addition on the north side that was formerly a cross passage. The street-facing gable has a small 2-light 19th-century casement window and a small 20th-century casement window. The south front is two stories high with three windows, featuring a stack and three small 2-light 19th-century casements above one larger 3-light casement, along with a central door and a 20th-century steel casement.

The east gable includes a small square light in a wooden frame, while the north front has a very small 2-light 19th-century casement above a very wide and low 19th-century door. Inside, there is a moulded stone cheeked fireplace from the 16th century beneath a large bressummer, along with some flagstone floors and some 19th-century quarry tiles. The roof structure is wind-braced, although it has not been seen. The walls of the building are up to 800mm thick.
