Description
The Market Cross is a 14th-century sandstone structure located on the west side of Aylburton High Street. It features a square base with five prominent steps, measuring approximately 3 meters at the base and tapering to form a squat pyramid shape. Above the base is a deep moulded plinth supporting the principal shaft, which is square with chamfered corners. The shaft is adorned with bold roll moulding and each face has deep cinquefoil-headed conch recessed niches. The entire structure is topped with a heavy moulded square capping that has a flat top. While the main body of the cross dates back to the 14th century, the capping was added in the 19th century. Notably, there is no shaft present.
