Description

The Cross Inn is a 17th-century inn with significant 19th-century alterations. It is constructed of rendered and painted rubble, with gable and back walls in rubble. The building has an L-shape, creating a small forecourt at the junction of High Street with Chapel Hill, opposite the market cross. A lower, gabled extension is visible to the right when viewed from the street. The inn has two gable stacks. The front facade facing High Street is 1½ storeys high and features a small, gabled dormer window above two 2-light 19th-century casement windows with small panes. A central 20th-century door is set beneath a moulded drip. The return front on the right side has two storeys and one window. This features a 1 over 2-light multi-paned casement window. A moulded string runs at mid-height and returns to the street gable, which has a blocked window with a moulded drip above a small 3-light 19th-century casement and an offset 2-light multi-paned 19th-century casement. The corner of the main wall is chamfered. A blocked window is also visible on the back gable. Inside, there is a spiral stair in a shaft, and one blocked window.
