Description
These are two statues known as the 'Images' located at numbers 133 and 135 on Church Road in Rainford. They were likely created in the 19th century, although they could be older. The statues are made of cast artificial stone or terracotta and depict figures in Roman-style costumes. The statue on the left, at number 133, may represent Perseus holding the head of Medusa or possibly Minerva, who is often shown with Medusa's head on her shield. The statue on the right, at number 135, appears to represent Mars. Both statues stand on square plinths that are set on brick bases, and each has an iron ring located in the small of the back. They are aligned at the same level and are spaced 6 meters apart, appearing to be in their original positions. The brick base at number 133 remains undisturbed. These statues may have been associated with Image House, which was previously located on the site.
