Description

Forge Farmhouse is a farmhouse that likely dates back to the 17th century. It was cased in brick in the early 19th century and has had later additions and alterations. The building features orange-red brick that probably conceals a timber frame and has a plain tile roof. It has a long central range with projecting gabled wings on both the left and right sides. The farmhouse is two storeys tall and has a layout of 1:2:1 bays. The windows are all 20th-century casements with three and four lights, featuring segmental heads on the windows of the projecting wings and the ground floor of the central range. The entrance is through a half-glazed door located under a late 19th-century gabled brick porch at the angle between the main range and the right wing. A prominent red brick ridge stack is positioned to the left of the center on the main range, with external lateral stacks (the left one truncated) on the projecting wings. There is also a single-storey mid-19th-century gritstone kitchen range that is at right angles to the rear on the left side. Inside, the main range has a chamfered spine beam with straight-cut chamfer stops and heavy joists. The right wing also features a chamfered spine beam with ogee chamfer stops to the joists. The left wing has an exposed central slightly cambered collar and tie beam truss upstairs, although the roof has been raised. Forge Farmhouse is a substantial building that occupies a prominent position in the village.
