Description
Lower Dairy House is a farmhouse that dates back to the 15th century, with remodels from the 17th and 18th centuries, along with later additions and alterations. It is constructed of red brick, which masks a timber frame that is partially exposed on the north and west walls, and features plain tiled roofs. The building has an L-shaped plan.
Originally, it had an open hall of three bays, with single square framed bays added at each end in the 16th or 17th century. A two-bay red brick range was added at right angles to the north, likely in the 18th century, along with a 19th-century extension that has a catslide roof to the north of the hall. The house is two storeys high and has three bays on the south side, featuring segmental headed casements with two and three lights, three gabled half dormers, and a large paired octagonal ridge stack positioned to the right of the centre. There is a central gabled entrance porch and an external lateral brick stack with rebuilt shafts on a large sandstone base, located behind the 16th or 17th-century extension to the left. The 18th-century range to the north includes a brick stack and raised verges on kneelers at its gable end.
Inside, the house retains a large fireplace located below the ridge stack and one truncated base cruck truss from the former open hall. Much of the later structural framing is also still intact.
