Description
This is an early 17th-century cottage located on Mill Bank, Harley. The building has undergone later additions and alterations. It is timber-framed with painted brick infill between the timbers, set on a high painted rubblestone plinth. The roof is thatched. Originally two cells in plan, the cottage includes a basement storey. It is one storey high with a gable-lit attic above the basement. The timber framing is characterized by square panels, three from sill to wall-plate, with long straight tension braces and V-struts from the collar to the right gable end. The left gable end was rebuilt in brick. The windows are a mix of 20th-century casements, with three late 19th-century casements in the basement. The entrance is through a 20th-century half-glazed door in the right gable end. A red brick end stack is located on the right side of the building.
Inside, the timber frame remains intact, including to the cross-wall, which has a slightly round-headed doorway leading to the basement. The basement and main floor feature chamfered ceiling beams. The roof is a single-purlin design with a central truss of Queen-strut construction and straight windbraces. A 19th-century lean-to addition sits on the left side, and a 20th-century flat-roofed extension is at the rear; these are not considered to be of significant architectural interest.
