Description
This is a late 16th-century cottage, with subsequent alterations. It is timber-framed and has red brick and plaster infill between the timbers, set on a stone plinth. The roof is thatched. The cottage is a single storey with a gable-lit attic, featuring four framed bays. The timber framing consists of square panels, three from the cill to the wall-plate, with long and short straight tension braces and V-struts from the collar to the right gable end. The windows are irregular, with late 20th-century casements set within the framing; two are present, one to either side of a boarded door. A late 19th-century gabled brick porch with a round-headed arch stands over the entrance, with a small late 19th-century casement above it to the right. A blocked doorway is located to the far left. There is an integral brick end stack to the left, and a prominent, stepped brick stack to the back wall on the right. Inside, the timber frame remains intact, including cross walls and a partition wall running the length of the house. A Tudor-arched doorway is visible in the partition wall. Original plank doors and a short, single-flight oak staircase are positioned to the right of the entrance. The roof is of Queen-strut construction, with cambered tie beams and collars. The cottage is an exceptionally well-preserved example of its type.
