Description

This is a threshing barn and cider mill with domestic accommodation above, located approximately 3 metres north of Plowsters. It dates from the 17th century, with some rebuilding in the 18th century. The structure is timber-framed, clad with weatherboard, and includes some brick and render infill, all set on a stone rubble plinth. The roof is slate, featuring raised and partly overhanging eaves.

The building has a plan consisting of six continuous framed bays, which includes a three-bay barn (two of which were widened in the 18th century) and a two-bay former house, with a 19th-century link bay.

On the exterior, the barn has a central carriage entrance with 20th-century boarded double doors. The weatherboard is set on square framing with tension braces and some cleft wattle infill. The link bay features garage doors. The former house has boarded doors and a two-light casement window in the gable end.

Inside the barn, there are three twin raking-strut trusses and a single purlin roof. The 17th-century bay has jowled posts, cambered tie beams, and straight wind braces, which were partly remodelled during the 18th-century rebuilding. The former house contains three altered twin vertical-strut trusses with a single trenched purlin roof and a 17th-century floor in the end bay. On the ground floor, there is a complete cider press in one bay and a cider mill in the other.
