Description

No. 5 Salop Street is a house that was later used as a house and shop. It dates from the 17th century and was extended and refaced in the early 19th century. The building features a roughcast timber frame and limestone rubble with a plain tile roof. It has two framed bays with later additions. There is a plinth and a mid to late 19th century integral brick end stack off-ridge to the left, as well as a large brick ridge stack off-centre to the right. The structure has a semi-basement and two storeys.

On the right side, there are two mid to late 19th century wooden cross windows on each floor. To the left, there is an early 19th century former shop front that includes a small-paned shop window, which is repeated on the return to the left. There is also a mid 19th century four-panelled door to the right, featuring early 19th century architrave and an open triangular pedimented bracketed hood, along with a boarded basement door to the right. The left-hand return front has a first floor glazing bar sash, while the right-hand return front features a first floor four-pane sash and a ground floor boarded door with a bracketed hood. There is likely an early 19th century two-storey addition set back to the left in the former passageway, with a stack to the rear and a ground floor 20th century casement in an early 19th century frame.

Inside, there is an early 18th century L-shaped staircase with a closed string, splat balusters shaped to resemble twisted balusters, a moulded handrail, and square newel posts. There is also an early 18th century cupboard beneath the stairs with a low raised panelled doorway and an open screen above featuring shaped splat balusters. Additionally, there is an early 18th century classical wall cupboard on the staircase, which consists of two fluted pilasters with moulded capitals, triglyphs, guttae, and a cornice on each side, flanking a door with a shaped-head raised and fielded panel.
