Description
This building is a former open hall that has been used as a barn and is now a cowshed. It likely dates from the 14th or 15th century and has undergone extensive alterations in the late 20th century. The structure is timber framed with cruck construction, but it is now completely covered in corrugated iron, except for the weatherboarded gable end on the north-east side. The roof is steeply pitched and also made of corrugated iron. On the south side, there are three modern eaves hatches, along with five stable doors on either side and a wide central doorway.
Inside, the barn originally had five framed bays that were open to the roof, but a loft has since been added. There are six large true cruck trusses with cambered upper and lower collars; five of these have Alcock apex type B, while one in the end wall features apex type V. The windbraces are dog-leg shaped and create crude lozenge patterns, and there is some partial smoke-blackening visible. Upper Farmhouse is not included in this listing.
