Description
Lower Farmhouse is a farmhouse, now a house, dating from around 1600 with a mid-17th century addition, and restored in the late 20th century. It is timber framed with lath and plaster infill on a brick and concrete plinth, and the rear wing is partly rebuilt in 19th century brick. The building has a plain tile roof and is arranged in an L-plan, consisting of two framed bays with a wing of two framed bays at the rear. It is two storeys high, featuring square panels (four from sole-plate to wall-plate) with long straight tension braces. There is an integral brick end stack to the left, which has been rebuilt at the top in the late 20th century, and an external brick end stack to the rear wing. The front has three windows, with 20th century two- and three-light wooden casements, and a 20th century lean-to timber framed porch to the left with a boarded door. The gable ends display exposed collar and tie-beam trusses with queen-struts and V-struts, while the left-hand end wall has been rebuilt in the late 20th century.
Inside, the ground floor features a chamfered cross-beamed ceiling with ogee stops. The right-hand ground-floor room has chamfered joists with run-out stops and a triangular-headed doorway, along with chamfered posts and a large open fireplace with a lintel. The rear wing includes a chamfered beam with ogee stops.
