Description

Upper Lake Farmhouse is probably of 15th-century origin, with substantial rebuilding and extensions in the mid-17th century, followed by alterations in the mid-19th century and refenestration in the mid-20th century. The construction is timber-framed, with some cruck construction, rendered and brick infill on a sandstone rubble plinth. The south-east block is mostly pebbledashed, with a corrugated iron roof to the north-west and a hipped slate roof to the south-east. The farmhouse originally comprised two framed bays of a former open hall house to the north-west, and a large partial rebuilding of the upper end, with an L-shaped addition to the south-east. It has one storey and an attic to the original section, with a two-storey and attic addition. The framing is irregular to the 15th-century part and square-panelled to the 17th century. On the north-east front, the right-hand block has a gabled dormer with a 2-light metal casement, a ground-floor 2-light metal casement, and a boarded door. A "scotch" is present on the central frame post. The right-hand return front features exposed full cruck trusses with 2 tie-beams and collar, a metal casement, and a boarded door. The left-hand block has a brick ridge stack and an integral brick end stack. Two gabled dormers have 2-light wooden casements. The front elevation of the left-hand block has 3-light metal casements, a central door with raised and fielded panels and a bracketed hood, and a rendered lean-to addition. The right-hand gable end shows exposed framing and a collar and tie beam truss with v-struts. The left-hand return front has a gabled dormer and a catslide roof over a brick outshut at the rear. The interior of the one-storey and attic block may have been one bay of the former open hall plus a short lower bay, or two bays of the former open hall. A central full cruck truss is present with arch-braced collar and a small collar high up, along with pairs of purlins and wind braces. The rest of the interior contains a 17th-century staircase with splat balusters and a first-floor 17th-century corner fireplace with a carved overmantel. Upper Lake was a medieval freehold held by the Treves family between 1540 and 1681.
