Description

Wigley Farmhouse is a farmhouse that likely dates from around 1600, with a refronting that probably occurred in the late 19th century. The front is made of red brick, while the right gable end is constructed of stone rubble, and the left end gable is rendered. It features a plain tile roof and has two brick ridge stacks. The building has a T-shaped plan, with a front range consisting of three rooms and a lobby entry, which has been extended to four rooms with later additions at the rear.

The southeast front is a single storey plus attic and has a two-window range of casements in canted bays. There is a plank door to the right, aligned with the stack, and a small single-light window, likely for the staircase, to the left of centre under the eaves. Additionally, there are two gabled dormers. The right gable end includes ground-floor and attic three-light casements. The house is now accessed through a later lean-to addition at the rear.

Inside, it is reported that there is a large open fireplace at the northwest end, along with a likely original winder staircase in the east corner. The two central rooms of the main range are also said to have deeply chamfered ceiling beams. The rear range is reported to have a cellar. Access to inspect both the interior and exterior of Wigley Farmhouse was refused during a resurvey in August 1985. Information about the interior was obtained from a manuscript plan in the Shropshire Record Office, prepared during fieldwork for the Victoria County History.
