Description
Farmhouse. It likely dates from the mid to late 16th century, with significant rebuilding in the mid-19th century. The house is timber framed with painted brick nogging; some sections are rebuilt in painted brick. It has a slate roof and a baffle-entry plan of three framed bays. The building is one storey and has an attic. The timber framing has square panels, arranged three from the sole-plate to the wall plate, with short corner braces to the rear. There are three gabled eaves dormers featuring two-light wooden casements. A brick ridge stack is positioned off-centre to the right, with an integral brick end stack to the right and an external lateral stack at the rear. The front has three windows, featuring 19th-century two-light, segmental-headed wooden casements. A mid-19th century four-panelled door is located between the first and second windows from the right, and is sheltered by a gabled brick porch with a segmental arch. The timber-framed left-hand end wall features a collar and tie-beam truss with queen-struts and V-struts. Framing is also exposed at the rear. A 19th-century brick addition is present at the rear, with an integral brick end stack. Inside, the roof has single purlins. The central ground-floor room has chamfered beams and joists with ogee stops. It also contains a large open fireplace with a chamfered and stopped lintel, an early 19th-century surround with flush-panelled sides and a moulded cornice, and an early 19th-century cast iron grate. A depressed-arched doorway leads into the ground-floor right-hand room, which was remodelled in the early 19th century incorporating moulded skirting, picture rail, and architraves to doors and windows. A further early 19th-century fireplace features a cast iron grate, a segmental arch, and a surround with reeded pilasters supporting a frieze and moulded cornice; flanking this are round-arched wall cupboards, each with reeded architraves, bases, and cross-reeding at the impost and keystone positions. There are pairs of one- and two-panelled doors, and plain shelves within. An early 19th-century staircase with stick balusters and a turned newel post is located at the rear. The farmhouse is notable for the completeness of its interior fittings, especially those dating from the early 19th century.
