Description
39 Broad Street is a house that features a mid-18th century front but has an earlier core. The building is constructed of brick and has brick stacks at the rear. It stands three stories tall with a cellar and has a three-window range. The windows are Venetian, with sashes, and the center window has Gothick glazing at the top. These windows are set under gauged brick shouldered arches with painted stucco key blocks. There are similar but smaller windows above, and the building has a parapet with moulded stone coping and pilasters. The central entrance has a 20th-century, six-panel door with a Gothick overlight, flanked by 2/2 sash windows, all under a moulded flat hood.
Inside, the house features 17th-century panelling in the hall, a dogleg staircase with turned balusters and newels, and a panelled dado, with splat balusters leading to the second floor. There are several fireplaces, some adorned with delft tiles, and decorative plasterwork on the walls and ceilings. The first floor includes a 17th-century moulded ceiling frame and plasterwork, along with a bolection-moulded fireplace.
