Description
No. 38 on Broad Street is a house dating from the mid-18th century. It is constructed of brick with a plain tile roof and features brick end stacks. The building is symmetrical, standing three stories tall with a five-window range. The windows include 6/6 sashes set in moulded cases with painted stone sills, topped by gauged brick flat arches, while the upper level has 3/3 sashes in similar settings. The eaves cornice is moulded and has modillions.
The central entrance features a six-panel door with a fanlight, set in a round-headed case beneath an open pediment hood supported by fluted pilasters. This door is flanked by additional 6/6 sash windows.
Inside, the house boasts decorative plasterwork friezes, cornices, and roses, along with a panelled room and fireplaces. It has six-panel doors with architraves and entablature, and an open well staircase with turned newels and balusters. A Venetian staircase window adds to the interior's elegance, featuring an enriched architrave and columns. Additionally, there is a rainwater head at the rear inscribed with "W.T.E 1768."
