Description
No. 40 Broad Street is an 18th-century house with a 15th-century rear range. It is constructed of brick and has a plain tile roof with a brick stack at the rear. The building stands three stories high with a cellar and features a four-window range. The windows include 6/6 sashes set under gauged brick flat arches, with a storey band above. There are also three 3/6 sashes in similar settings, along with a storey band and a stone-coped parapet.
At the center left, there are steps with wrought-iron handrails leading to a 20th-century six-panel door, which has an ornamental fanlight in a round-headed case, all beneath a moulded flat hood supported by fluted consoles. The right gable features a returned storey band and stone coping. The interior is reported to have two trusses of 15th-century roof in the rear range.
