Description
55 and 56 High Street is an early 17th-century building, formerly known as Raynald's Mansion, now divided into two tenements. It features a timber frame and plaster construction, with some painted brick, and stands three storeys tall. The house has three bays, with two square bays added around 1682, all covered by a pentice tile roof. On the second storey, between the bays, there is a balcony adorned with turned spirals and carved heads. The windows throughout are 19th-century plain three-light casements, and there are simple small shop fronts from the same period. An inscription and the date 1682 can be found on the cornice of the right-hand bay. The central panels display lozenge-type studding, and the building has three gables with modern or restored carved bargeboards. Nos 53 to 61, the County Library, and No 63 form a group with this building.
