Milepost Approximately 15 Metres To South Of Bridge Number 57

This is a milepost located approximately 15 metres south of Bridge Number 57 on the Shropshire Union Canal in Sutton Upon Tern. It dates from around 1830 and is made of cast iron. The milepost is a short cylindrical shape with a round top and features curved rectangular plates on the front, two at the top, and one at the bottom. The lettering is in a superscribed serif style, indicating distances: 'AUTHERLEY / JUNCTION / 24. MILES' on the left side, 'NANTWICH / 15 / MILES.' on the right side, and 'NORBURY / JUNCTION / 8 1/2 MILES.' at the bottom. This section of the canal was constructed as part of the Birmingham and Liverpool Junction Canal, which was authorized by an act passed in 1826 and opened in 1835. It was later absorbed by the Ellesmere and Chester Canal in 1845 and became part of the Shropshire Union Canal in 1846.
