Description
Tyrley Lock Number 1 on the Shropshire Union Canal was built between 1827 and 1830 and features a design by Thomas Telford. The lock is constructed from brick and stone, with wing walls and concrete coping. It has offside tail steps and includes a single steel top gate equipped with one mechanical gate paddle gearing and two mechanical ground paddle gearings. The lock also has double wooden bottom gates with two mechanical gate paddle gearings. An oval iron number plate is located on the offside gate, and there are concrete heel grip platforms. Additionally, brick and concrete ramps lead down to the towpath and the adjoining bridge.
