Description

Lock Number 60 on the Trent and Mersey Canal is a pair of narrow locks located in Betchton, built between 1772 and 1775 by James Brindley and Hugh Henshall, with an additional off-side lock added in the early 1830s, likely by Thomas Telford. Both locks feature brick chambers with stone coping and quoins, and a central island with a cutwater. The late 20th-century gates include a single wooden top gate and double wooden bottom gates for the towpath side lock, and a single steel top gate with double wooden bottom gates for the off-side lock. Steps made mainly of concrete lead down to the lower level on the towpath side. Each tail has a wooden plank split footbridge on brackets. An off-side weir is also present. The Trent and Mersey Canal was constructed between 1766 and 1777 by Brindley and Henshall. This lock is listed for its group value with the adjacent bridge.
