Description

Tyrley Lock Number 5 is a lock on the Shropshire Union Canal, built between 1827 and 1833, with 20th-century alterations. It was designed by Thomas Telford. The lock features a brick and stone chamber with concrete coping on the off side and stone coping on the towpath side. The head walls are made of brick with concrete coping, while the tail walls are constructed of brick with both brick and concrete coping, including steps on the off side. The lock has a single wooden top gate equipped with one mechanical gate paddle gearing and two mechanical ground paddle gearings, along with a concrete heel grip platform. Additionally, there are double wooden bottom gates with two mechanical gate paddle gearings and brick and concrete heel grip platforms.
