Description
Tyrley Lock Number 4 on the Shropshire Union Canal was built between 1827 and 1830 and features design elements by Thomas Telford. The lock consists of a brick and stone chamber with concrete coping and brick wing walls also topped with concrete coping. It includes offside tail steps and a single wooden top gate, along with one mechanical gate and two mechanical ground paddle gearings. There is a concrete heel grip platform, and the double bottom gates are made of steel, equipped with two mechanical gate paddle gearings and brick and concrete heel grip platforms. The lock has undergone some alterations in the 20th century.
