Shropshire Union Canal Milepost Approximately 116 Metres To South East Of Bridge Number 55

This is a milepost located approximately 116 metres southeast of Bridge Number 55 on the Shropshire Union Canal, dating from around 1830. It is made of cast iron and features a short cylindrical round-topped design with curved rectangular plates on the front. There are two plates at the top and one at the bottom. The lettering on the milepost is in a superscribed serif style, indicating distances: "AUTHERLEY/JUNCTION 23 MILES" on the left side, "NANTWICH 16 MILES" on the right side, and "NORBURY/JUNCTION 7 1/2 MILES" at the bottom. This section of the canal was constructed as part of the Birmingham and Liverpool Junction Canal, which was authorized by an act passed in 1826 and opened in 1835. It was later absorbed by the Ellesmere and Chester Canal in 1845 and became part of the Shropshire Union Canal in 1846.
