Milepost Approximately 150 Metres To West Of Bridge Number 48

This is a milepost located approximately 150 metres west of Bridge Number 48 on the south side of the Shropshire Union Canal. It dates from around 1830 and is made of cast iron. The milepost has a short cylindrical shape with a round top and features curved rectangular plates on the front, with two at the top and one at the bottom. The lettering is in a superscribed serif style, indicating distances: "AUTHERLEY/JUNCTION/21 MILES" on the left side, "NANTWICH/18/MILE" on the right side, and "NORBURY JUNCTION/5 1/2 MILES" at the bottom. This section of the canal was constructed as part of the Birmingham and Liverpool Junction Canal, which was authorized by an act passed in 1826 and opened in 1835. It was absorbed by the Ellesmere and Chester Canal in 1845 and later became part of the Shropshire Union Canal in 1846.
