Description
The Old Hall is a house that has been divided into two residences. It dates from the mid-18th century, possibly incorporating an earlier structure, with later additions made in the 19th century. The building is constructed of red brick with red sandstone ashlar dressings and features a plain tile roof. It has an H-plan layout with projecting gabled cross wings and 19th-century extensions at the rear of the right-hand cross wing.
The house is two storeys tall with an attic and has a chamfered stone plinth. There are pairs of star-shaped brick ridge stacks located off-centre to the left and right, along with an external brick end stack at the rear of the left-hand wing and two brick stacks on the right-hand wing. The façade is arranged in a 1:3:1 bay pattern, with late 20th-century cross windows that have stone sills and gauged brick heads with flush keystones. The right-hand cross wing features blind windows.
A small-paned half-glazed door is located in the second bay from the left, framed by a lugged architrave, fluted frieze, and moulded cornice. There are 19th-century external steps with a wooden balustrade leading up to a hipped-roofed porch. The cross wings have three-bay return fronts, with the right-hand return front featuring a full-height half-octagonal bay from the 19th century.
The layout suggests that The Old Hall was a rebuilding of an earlier house, likely completed in multiple phases, as indicated by the variations in brick bond and other details on the façade. The ground-floor window in the left-hand cross wing appears to have been altered, suggesting evidence of a wider opening, and the gable of this wing has also been rebuilt.
