Description
The Grainger/Payne memorial is a pedestal tomb located approximately 15 meters north of the vestry of the Church of All Saints in Baschurch. It dates from around 1820 and is made of sandstone ashlar. The tomb has a square section with a moulded plinth and capping, topped by an urn finial that features a fluted band and festooned garlands. The north side bears an inscription for James Payne, who died in 1837, while the east and west faces commemorate members of the Grainger family. The inscriptions on the latter two faces are largely illegible as of February 1987, but the one on the west is dated 1812 or 1819. The memorial was formerly set within a square railed enclosure, of which the stone plinth still remains.
